Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first African American soldier to serve in the United States Navy during World War I. He enlisted in the Navy in 1917 and served as a mess attendant in the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois. He was later promoted to the rank of Steward's Mate Second Class and served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters of war. He was honorably discharged in 1919.
