A man named Jacob Davis had an idea. He created pants that were held together with small pieces of metal. The pieces, called rivets, were
stronger than thread.
Davis also used a strong cloth. The cloth was canvas, a cloth people used for tents. It was very difficult to tear. In 1890, a cloth called
denim was used instead of canvas. The first blue jeans were born.
Today, jeans come in different styles and colors. But they are still strong pants made with denim and rivets.
