Question
Escape
I had never experienced darkness as I did that night.
My father and I were hiding underneath a pile of straws
and among a herd of goats. The truck that was carrying
us to safety was slow because the driver could not see
very well at night. I held Papa's hands throughout the
long, wretched hours. Only through a gap between the
straws could I see one or two distant stars.
We were escaping the place that had been our home
for generations. I thought about the cupboards filled with
books and my rocking horse that Uncle Hashmi had
built for me. The wooden horse was the only thing that
made me forget about Mom. I remembered the portraits
of my mom hanging in our living room. I was already
missing our house, the biggest mansion in Kabul.
