C. five trading ports in China
Following the First Opium War, Britain received five trading ports in China. These ports, known as treaty ports, were opened up for foreign trade and included Guangzhou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Ningbo, and Shanghai. The Treaty of Nanking, signed in 1842, granted Britain these trading ports as well as other concessions, such as the cession of Hong Kong to British control. These treaty ports played a significant role in facilitating trade between China and Britain, and later with other Western powers as well.
