Question
Naming Binary Covalent & lonic Chemical Formulas & Compounds Interactive Activity
E
THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN NAMING FORMULAS AND COMPOUNDS IS DETERMINE IF IT IS AN
Onic or covalent bond IF IT IS A COVALENT BOND THEN IT cONTAINS 2or more nonmetals IF IT
IS AN 1ONIC BOND THEN IT CONTAINS melal and nonm YOU NEED TO KNOW THE Valence a FOR
1ONIC COMPOUNDS AND add THE CHARGES FOR IONIC CHEMICAL FORMULAS. YOU NEVER
PUT FOR IONIC BONDS YOU NEED TO KNOW THE
COMPOUNDS. YOU NEVER PUT IN FRONT OF THE FIRST WORD OF A COVALENT
COMPOUND. YOU ADD
FOR CoVALENT
AT THE END OF THE SECOND WORD FOR IONIC AND COVALENT
il l
COMPOUNDS.

Answer
To name a formula or compound, first determine if it is ionic or covalent. If it is covalent, it contains 2 or more nonmetals. If it is ionic, it contains a metal and a nonmetal. For ionic compounds, you need to know the valence of each element and add the charges. Never put "mono" in front of the first word of a covalent compound. For both ionic and covalent compounds, add "-ide" at the end of the second word.
