Use the Text Editor to document your observations and answer the questions. Materials You will need: two sugar cubes (or Lifesavers candies), warm water, two cups, and two spoons • Grind one sugar cube or Lifesaver up into little pieces. • Fill the two cups with warm water. • As close to the same time as possible, put the whole sugar cube (LIfesaver) into one cup of water and the ground sugar (Lifesaver) into the other cup. Stir each briefly for 30 seconds. • Observe the time required for the complete dissolving of the sugar (LIfesaver) in each cup. 1. How do the times compare? Which reaction rate is faster? 2. How does the collision theory help explain your observations? 3. Do you think the fact that the water was warm or the stirring affected the outcome of the experiment. Why or why not? Linked assignments are available when the student is expected to create and submit multiple copies of the same writing assignment. For example, the first writing assignment requires the student to submit a rough draft, and the second writing assignment requires the student to submit a final copy of the assignment. Linked aclivities are not avallable to the student until the first activily in the sequence has been submitted for grading. Answer

To answer the questions posed in the activity, the time required for the complete dissolving of the sugar in each cup must be compared. The reaction rate of the ground sugar will be faster than the whole sugar cube. The collision theory explains that the smaller particles of the ground sugar have more surface area, allowing for more collisions with the water molecules, resulting in a faster reaction rate. The fact that the water was warm and the stirring may have affected the outcome of the experiment, as the heat energy and stirring motion can increase the rate of reaction.
