as I walked toward that sledgehammer game. I needed to hit that thing hard
enough to send it to the top and ring the bell. My brother scoffed, mocking my
skinny arms. I said, "Let's go, then Jake looked surprised but took the
challenge. He slammed that hammer with every ounce of his strength to no
avail. He missed the bell by a good foot.
But I watched and learned. Though I am about 20 pounds lighter, 2 years
younger, and a girl (which is supposed to mean weak, I hear), I am smarter
than a whip. I could see that the game required not only strength but also
strategy. I took the hammer, almed for the very edge of the catapult, and
slammed it with all my might. "Ding|" The metal made contact. I hit the bell on
my first try! "Once again, the woman wins!" shouted the announcer, I felt very
clever, strong, and happy to be holding a huge stuffed animal I won on my
own.
