The City Council determined that the building next to Angelo's apartment needed to be remodeled. The two-story structure held a grocery
store when Angelo was a little boy. He had fond memories of buying candy and gum from Mr. Santos, the owner, whenever his grandmother gave
him a few quarters. Memories of days spent visiting with Mrs. Santos spun through Angelo's head as he watched the city workers tape off the area
for safety.
Angelo could see into the building, and the aisles looked nothing like the clean rows Mrs. Santos had kept during Angelo's youth. Back when
Mr. and Mrs. Santos ran the store, everything in it was always tidy. Now, dirt and dust covered the floor. Angelo missed Mr. and Mrs. Santos, but he
was happy for them because they were able to move closer to their daughter and their new grandchild. A slow smile spread across Angelo's face as
he realized the new building would improve the neighborhood and generate new memories for other families living nearby.
