Orbital debris is a fancy name for the junk that orbits Earth. Abandoned launch vehicles
are examples of orbital debris. This space junk can collide with spacecraft and poses
particular risks to the International Space Station (ISS). As a result, NASA tracks space
junk as it orbits Earth. To protect against pieces of debris that are smaller than a half
inch, the ISS has debris shields. For larger pieces of debris, however, NASA follows a set
of guidelines. Sometimes astronauts are aware of the debris in advance. When this is the
case, NASA may avoid collisions by slightly moving the ISS. Other times, large debris
makes a surprise approach. In this case, the ISS crew may respond by moving into the
Soyuz spacecraft, which serves as a lifeboat in case of emergency.
