Skeletal muscle is also known as voluntary muscle because it is under conscious control. This type of muscle is attached to bones by tendons and is responsible for movement of the body. When we want to move a body part, our brain sends a signal to the skeletal muscle fibers to contract, causing movement. This is in contrast to cardiac muscle, which is found in the heart and is involuntary, meaning we do not have conscious control over it.
