Optima receives orders from her clients in a variety of
ways. Some give the overall dimensions, whereas
others give the total area. Her customer service
representatives need to be able to correctly take the
information from the client and give the proper
measurements to be sewn.
Suppose a customer places an order for a quilt with
total area 3x2
+ 19x + 20. The customer service
representative uses the given area diagram to begin
finding the overall dimensions. The customer service
representative knows that two corners can be filled in
with " 3x'
2" and u20 " The sum of the shaded areas
needs to be " 19x." Then the completed diagram can
be used to find the dimensions. Unfortunately,
determining how to split " 19x" can sometimes be tricky.
2. Complete the diagram to obtain the correct
measurements for the quilt being ordered. Then state
the overall dimensions of the quilt.
